VGC Berlin Warstory: Jay and Silent Bob strike back!Yeah guys, I just arrived home from my trip to Berlin... okay, actually I'm home since about 6 hours but I just wasn't able to write anything because I was just dead tired. I left for Augsburg two days before the VGC actually began because I wanted to visit my friend Hilikus who has been my driver for that whole weekend. It was kinda convenient to visit him as well since I wasn't entirely sure with some Pokémon and movesets. As you will see (or not), we ended up using exactly the same team though the Pokémon did indeed differ in regards to movesets and stats.
While playtesting in mirror matches, we just watched Hancock, drank beer and had a crapload of fun together. I have to thank you and your mother for the great meals as well. We talked about a lot of random and real life shit and ended up being two hours late with going to bed.
At friday alarm was set to 9.30am but I woke up around 9am and went to the bathroom. We had well-tasting breakfast and went to buy some food and softdrinks for our seven-hours-ride from Augsburg to Berlin. Shortly before noon, Viper and (BBB)!!? arrived at Augsburg-Haunstetten train station and after some chit-chat we began our journey with Pokémon-, Digimon-, Dragon Ball Z- and Rocky-soundtracks :D The ride was straightforward but when we entered Berlin city there was a shitload of traffic so we needed almost half an hour just for driving the last two kilometres .- appi/3,1415.-., physics student from Berlin University of Applied Sciences was our host and we went to buy food and booze after having arrived at his place. We decided to kill the time left until saturday morning with Wii games and VGC playtesting where we had some nice matches. My team got a 5-0 streak there so I was really confident about my Pokémon and myself. Viper didn't want to reveal his team so he was the only one who did not play. After that, I don't remember that much because I was quite drunk X)
Apropos, revealing teams, here you are:
Quote:
~ Arcanine "kindieeeee"; Protect / Heatwave / Flare Blitz / Extremespeed @ Shuca/LO
~ Metagross "Heavymetal"; Meteor Mash / Earthquake / Bullet Punch / Explosion @ Shuca/Lum Berry
~ Garchomp "Silent Bob"; Earthquake / Dragon Claw / Rock Slide / Protect @ Haban
~ Zapdos "CultOfLuna"; Thunderbolt / Heatwave / Hidden Power / Detect @ LO/Lum
~ Salamence "Qutzlcoatl"; Draco Meteor / Dragon Pulse / Heatwave / Hydropump @ CSpecs
~ Snorlax "Bavariablu"; Bodyslam / Firepunch / Selfdestruct / Protect @ Lefties
A goodstuff team to the core. I was quite afraid that rain dance will beat the living hell out of me but I luckily didn't face one the entire tourney.
Saturday morning, just before 6am, I woke up, blinded by the sunlight coming in through the window and I began to fill out my team sheet which I completed after having a good time on the toilet -. When I returned, the others were awake as well and also have begun filling out their team sheets. I was amazed at how nervous my guys were and so we had a nice breakfast after which we left for the venue, having a walk over there of approximately 20 minutes. When we got there at around 9am, there were already 50 people waiting in front of the goddam hotel door. We got in and lined up for registration and I got #24. I was just hanging around in the hotel foyer, buying a Coke and cards from Berlin, when I got a call from my long-time-buddy Fatum/gara_meista - he mistook street names and therefore was late.. he made it to the registration desks 2 minutes before it was closed and got #117, so 117 attendants were in the senior class, who, of course, all got into the event.
Since I was in the first flight I got to play relatively early - I couldn't know that this would have been of vital importance for the whole tourney... I will try to scratch together the fragments of the matches I can remember.
First Match: Round of 128:
Zapdos and Snorlax. Random first turn boom + Detect. Advantage at the beginning and then cleaning with Zapdos and Garchomp. A straight 3-0 though my opponent was really a noob...
Second Match: Round of 64 vs DarkThomas:
DarkThomas is an average-skilled player from Germany's Bisafans.de-forums. He leads with Aerodactly and Dugtrio and I chose Zaplax once again... okay, although it seems like a small disadvantage this is definitely something I can win. I Detect with Zapdos and Selfdestruct with Snorlax - at least this is what I wanted but I got attacked by double Rock Slide. Flinch on Snorlax. Switch to Metagross and Garchomp. Now I think I can Explode in his face because Dugtrio will certainly not use Rock Slide. Aerodactyl uses Rock Slide and Dugtrio uses Earthquake as predicted while I Protect with Garchomp to wait for the boom - flinch -.- From there on I cannot remember what moves I chose but it was enough to lose.Over and out.Disappointed, I left the battling area... and there the random shit begins: "Hey you wanna play again?" I was totally perplexed, thinking something like why the fuck are the guys from the staff kidding with dropped out participants? He told me to registrate once again because there was a minus of 11 users to complete a 128 man bracket. I did that and got into the last flight as #128. I was one of 11 wildcard users.
Second try - First Match, Round of 128:
Once again my opponent wasn't that good and essentially all I did was boom two of his Pokémon right at the start and win a 3-on-2-situation. Can't remember anything =/
Second try - Second Match, Round of 64:
I started with Metamence and that just wins me the match because Specs Draco Meteor one-hits one of his Pokémon directly. I can get in a boom on two of the opponent's Pokés and Garchomp + Arcanine do the rest.
Second try - Third Match, Round of 32:
As you probably have suspected, I forgot the details of that match but something worth of note was that my opponent freeze'd my Arcanine with Metagross's Ice Punch. In the next turn I instantly defrosted by use of Flare Blitz and finished off Metagross before it could deal any more damage. I was quite surprised because I just didn't know about that side effect. Anyways, I won that match clearly, think it was 3-0'd.
Holy shit, I made it to sweet sixteen with my second shot. But even though I started over again I wasn't the last to make it to sweet sixteen because there was an Italian involved in a stallwar in the third match of which he came out victorious. There was no finalist's lounge or the like as in the U.S. tourneys but instead of that we were constipated for a photoshooting. I looked for who made it to sweet sixteens, seeing both Italians there (don't remember your Smogon nicks, you're welcome to write me PMs anyways) and Fatum, Picollo, Daisuke, appi/3,1415(and so on), appi's brother as well as Hilikus. Fatum and Picollo respectively win their matches as well as Daisuke while Hilikus lost to a trick room team and appi lost to Fatum. appi's brother won his match so he made it further than appi himself who trained him a team.
Second try - Fourth Match, Sweet Sixteen:
I can only remember the ending. I think there was actually a bit of luck on his side involved but I may be totally mistaken. The match ends with my Garchomp and Salamence facing Focus Sash Obamasnow which was my match then.
How the fuck can a noob like this make it to quarterfinals might have been the thought that occured to my crew (Hilikus, (BBB)!!?, Viper). Because it is totally random whom I'm paired up with I knew I couldn't get out of Daisuke's way any longer and so it was. The twenty-minute-match will be uploaded by my buddy Viper soon so I won't tell you any more than the end is my 35% health Metagross facing a 100% Cresselia. My MMs never missed and critted two times so in the end I won that match. It was a kinda haxxy match as well but that’s Pokémon, son.
Fatum defeated appi’s /b/rother in the second quarterfinal and Picollo and Zelda1983 (ex Consoles Sports League player) won their repective matches. The next opponent, randomly assigned, is Picollo whom I know for over five years by now. We’d been theorymoning VGC teams together when it wasn’t even officially announced that there would be a German qualifier so that match was promising for the spectators and for the two of us. There will also be a video available of this match in a few days so I keep it short here, he led with Bronzong and Snorlax, predicting fast sweepers and I led with Arcanine and Snorlax which obviously was an advantage. I don’t remember the moves anymore but essentially I just outsmarted/surprised him with my predictions.
GODDAM LOLOLOL what the fuck, have I just won a trip for two to San Diego? I still haven’t realized it by now… but I was in trance since then. Fatum raped Zelda1983 in the other semi final and so I face him once again. He was my sparring partner in Netbattle and he used Rhybat (Rhyperior with Lightningrod and Crobat) there with some surprise success. But just before the finals start, Zelda1983 and another user go to the judges and complain about massive use of Arcanine from our group, with three of them even having the same nickname (“kindieeeee” is a Bavarian battler who might have come if he hadn’t have a soccer league game). They check all of them and see that they are from different trainers, with different spreads and IVs and natures, so nothing wrong here. It’s just that Arcanine needs more love <3
The final wasn’t really that great but I just won’t give a shit on anyone who says it is really bad.
Here you go.
Pics will be edited in tomorrow or something like that. Hope you enjoyed the read despite my bad English.
Thanks to:
- Picollo for being such an awesome guy and worthy semifinalist, good luck in Paris next weekend!
- Flame for much playtesting over NBS
- appi for housing
- the whole Bavarian Crew for awesomeness and the carpool to Berlin and back home (voyage cost me 35€ as opposed to 100€ I had paid if I had come by train)
- underdawg, Dale, Biggenz, Legolas and all the others who had NB VGC style battles with me =)
- again the Bavarian crew which filmed my matches (quarterfinal, semifinal, final)
- Filb / PieceOK for the nicely edited final vid
- Fatum for being an epic opponent
- ARCANINE <33333
- not McDonalds -

ZitatRound 1
ZitatI was quite nervous (not to mention queasy) going into my first match. Despite my confidence that my team would roll inexperienced players, I was afraid something would go horribly wrong and I would get haxxed or misclick or meet a team that countered mine perfectly. Fortunately, I was paired with the holy grail of first round opponents. The kid used a Lv. 13 Piplup, and Lv. 7 Starly, Kricketot, and Shinx. I don't know if his file got deleted 30 minutes before the tournament or what, but I think you can figure out what became of his pokemon. Remember what I said about Nintendo needing a new selection system? Yeah... exhibits A-Z right here.

vielleicht bringt das ja was *_*

Schmarrn.
ZitatSummons rain for 5 turns. This boosts the damage of Water moves by 50%, and causes Fire moves to do 50% damage. Thunder always hits (and has a chance to hit through Detect and Protect equal to 100% minus the accuracy against a non-Protected opponent). SolarBeam has 60 base power when Rain is in effect. Moonlight, Morning Sun, and Synthesis heal 1/4 of the user's maximum HP.
This.

Heracross @Choice Band
Ability: Guts
Adamant Nature (-Satk +Atk)
4; 252+; 0; 0-; 0; 252;~Close Combat
~Megahorn
~Nightslash
ZitatPorygon-Z @Choice Scarf
Ability: Adaptility
Modest Nature (-Atk +Satk)
4; 0-; 0; 252+; 0; 252;~Thunderbolt
~Dark Pulse
~Tri Attack
Zitat
Lucario LIFE Orb
Ability: Steadfast
Rash Nature (-Sdef +Satk)
0; 56; 0; 200+; 0-; 252;~HP {ice}
~Aurasphere
~Blaze Kick
